About Ghana & Accra

Ghana, formerly known as the Gold Coast, was a major centre of transatlantic trade due to its rich gold resources. It was the first African nation to gain independence from colonial rule in 1957, led by Kwame Nkrumah. Today, Ghana is one of Africa’s most politically stable countries, known for its strong democracy and economic growth.

Accra, Ghana’s capital, was originally a Ga settlement in the 15th century before becoming an important trading hub for the Portuguese, Dutch, and British. The Ga people, an ethnic group native to the coastal region, established fishing and trading communities here, which later evolved into a major commercial centre. Accra became the capital of the British Gold Coast in 1877 and later Ghana’s capital after independence in 1957. Today, Accra is a dynamic city blending colonial history with modern development.
