Ghana, formerly known as the Gold Coast, was a major centre of transatlantic trade due to its rich gold resources. It was the first African nation to gain independence from colonial rule in 1957, led by Kwame Nkrumah. Today, Ghana is one of Africa’s most politically stable countries, known for its strong democracy and economic growth. The nation is rich in cultural heritage, from Ashanti traditions to the coastal forts of Cape Coast and Elmina. With thriving agriculture, mining, and technology sectors, Ghana continues to be a leader in West Africa, attracting investment and tourism alike.
Accra, Ghana’s capital, was originally a Ga settlement in the 15th century before becoming an important trading hub for the Portuguese, Dutch, and British. The Ga people, an ethnic group native to the coastal region, established fishing and trading communities here, which later evolved into a major commercial centre. Accra became the capital of the British Gold Coast in 1877 and later Ghana’s capital after independence in 1957. Today, Accra is a dynamic city blending colonial history with modern development. It is home to bustling markets, cultural landmarks like the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, and vibrant nightlife. As Ghana’s political and economic centre, it hosts international conferences, high-end hotels, and a thriving arts scene, making it a key gateway to West Africa.
